Stepping up and showing up

It's real. It's happening. I'm actually using my degree, MOM! All those years of studying and stressing over paying money to become a "writer," (well, you always can be a "writer," but actually getting paid for your writing is another feat) it was all worth it.

I know I've spoken about it before, very briefly, but I've had an amazing opportunity to work for Oahu Publications, Inc. – as of last December (2014). My experience here has been indescribable, but I will try my best to give you an idea. Firstly, I work for LITERALLY the best boss any employee could ask for, Midweek Publisher Ron Nagasawa. Although I had worked under him as a freelance writer for a year, prior to this staff position, I've had the privilege of working within close-quarters, and he has truly shown me how a business should be run: Like a family. He makes it a point to praise the artists, writers and "family members" that make up The Midweek staff. He goes out of his way to remember the minute details of each employee, and brings humor and cheer to the office, which does feel more like a home than a work space. I've worked for some really terrible people, and even when I didn't mind my bosses, the entities still lacked the respect and care that every company should possess. I am so grateful to be working for a man with such integrity as Ron.

My coworkers are a bunch of crazy, passionate and wonderful people. I've never been surrounded by so many beings that are so completely in-tuned with their crafts. It's inspiring and encouraging to be working with such innovators. I have truly begun to make lifelong friends. Here, I am home.

Now, on to details of my actual job: Aside from my main job, helping to organize Hawaii Renovation, I've been my dream job! I've been able to write every week for Dining Out, venturing to various restaurants on Island, chatting, writing and most importantly, eating! Not only am I able to speak with chefs and restaurant owners, but I also get to work with the photographers we have at Midweek, and what I treat it is to see how they capture a dish, down to its true deliciousness. The entire process is truly rewarding, not just for my stomach, but also for my brain and spirit!

Never did I think that I would be where I am now, indulging in my passions: Food and writing. So thankful.

This is the most recent feature for "Step Up to the Plate," which showcases Il Lupino's Linguine alla Pescatore ($49). It was awesome (wrote an article about it, but nothing describes this dish as well as this statement).

I've never been so inspired, motivated and excited in a really long time. I can't wait for the future, which means more food, friends and experiences.

Bon Appetit!
