It's a Beautiful Life
Driving home today, lost in the stressful thoughts I usually carry around--How do I bake brownies without burning them again? (You know, those sorts of things)--it suddenly began to rain. Then, it poured. It really was a dumping, a huge sky-filled dumping. Surprisingly, however, the sun continued to shine, and blue still peeked through the swollen clouds.
I've been noticing this thing, one that I had forgotten about Hawaii, that when it rains, there are seldom gray clouds and covered skies, but mostly blue skies and sunshine. That's why there's always a rainbow after the rain in Hawaii, because the sun still shines in the midst of "the dumping."
As I sat in my car, too lazy or too absorbed to turn my windshield wipers on, I felt the warmth of the sun and the bliss of the day before me, recognizing the rain as only an adornment to the afternoon, not a hindrance. Jumping out of the car, once I had reached home, I took a deep breath, smelling the rain on hot asphalt and remembered for a second that even though I'm jobless and completely confused about my future, I was Home. I looked around and realized that through the dimmest of times, I was fortunate enough to be with family and friends, waking up every morning to a beautiful life, rain or no rain.
When it rains, it pours, but that's okay, because in Hawaii, the sun still shines and rainbows are ensured.
