What's in a Name

When I was a freshman in college our professor made us listen to a TED Talk given by a CEO of a large company. His topic was about acknowledgement. He reiterated the importance of acknowledging everyone, whether it's smiling at a person walking past you or knowing the name of every employee in your company. This CEO, whose name I have ironically forgotten, took the extra steps to not only remember a name but to take a genuine interest in a person's life; remembering their kids' names and memorizing the previous conversations they've had. By doing this the CEO made connections with people that he treasured and it enriched his life with happiness. There are people who will forever remember him as a genuine and kind man, words I hope help to define me in the future.

While working, I had the privilege to meet a similar gentlemen named Danny. He was painting a part of our surf shop and sported the look of an old uncle who lived on the beach in his paint-spattered Crocs and bleached long hair. Still, Danny is unforgettable. He quickly asked for my name and used every opportunity to use it when speaking to me. I soon realized that he did this with everyone. He repeated names like he would forget them if he didn't, but it seemed more than that really. He repeated names to establish importance and value in the person behind the name.

In similar cases I always have respect for people that remember my name or a conversation we had no matter how long ago it was. I am guilty of being the exact opposite at times. I hope to be more like Danny, not just so people can call me nice things, but so that my life will also be enriched with happiness. What's in a name? So, so much.
